Honest Compressions and Their Application to Compression Schemes

چکیده
The existence of a compression scheme for every concept class with bounded VC-dimension is one of the oldest open problems in statistical learning theory. Here we demonstrate the existence of such compression schemes under stronger assumptions than finite VCdimension. Specifically, for each concept class we associate a family of concept classes that we call the alternating concept classes. Under the assumption that these concept classes have bounded VC-dimension, we prove existence of a compression scheme. This result is motivated by recent progress in the field of model theory with respect to an analogues problem. In fact, our proof can be considered as a constructive proof of these advancements. This means that we describe the reconstruction function explicitly. Not less important, the theorems and proofs we present are in purely combinatorial terms and are available to the reader who is unfamiliar with model theory. Also, using tools from model theory, we apply our results and prove existence of compression schemes in interesting cases such as concept classes defined by hyperplanes, polynomials, exponentials, restricted analytic functions and compositions, additions and multiplications of all of the above.

A Comparison of Fractal Methods with DCT and Wavelets
The paper contains a brief description of fractal image compression methods with sample compression results. We also present comparative results between two fractal schemes, discrete cosine transform, and a wavelet method. We show that, with the PSNR as a measure of image quality, some fractal schemes perform best over the range of compressions of most interest.
متن کاملData Compression in Database Query Processing
Row-oriented databases (or “row-store”) employ data compression methods (like dictionary encoding) to reduce the I/O cost by decreasing the data sizes. However, there are two limitations on row-stores when applying data compression schemes: (1) row-stores only allow encoding one single value at a time, and (2) they have to pay the decompression cost in query processing. The above shortcomings l...
متن کاملCardiopulmonary resuscitation without ventilation.
Current resuscitation methods, although occasionally effective, rarely perform as well as initially anticipated. Some of the disappointment can be attributed to the difficulty of the task for many, including both professional and lay first responders. Significant attention has been paid recently to the need to simplify both the technique and the teaching of resuscitation. In considering simplif...
متن کاملSimilarity preserving compressions of high dimensional sparse data
The rise of internet has resulted in an explosion of data consisting of millions of articles, images, songs, and videos. Most of this data is high dimensional and sparse. The need to perform an efficient search for similar objects in such high dimensional big datasets is becoming increasingly common. Even with the rapid growth in computing power, the bruteforce search for such a task is impract...
متن کاملComparison of two integration schemes for a micropolar plasticity model
Micropolar plasticity provides the capability to carry out post-failure simulations of geo-structures due to microstructural considerations and embedded length scale in its formulation. An essential part of the numerical implementation of a micropolar plasticity model is the integration of the rate constitutive equations. Efficiency and robustness of the implementation hinge on the type of int...
